Sometime in December 1954, most likely in the San Remo Bar in Greenwich Village, New York City, artist Jake Spencer drew his pal, Maxwell Bodenheim, into the pages of Jack Kerouac’s notebook. This particular notebook is Buddhist focused (“Dharma (4)) and now housed at the Berg Collection – New York Public Library. Bodenheim had died approximately 10 months earlier. Kerouac had. met Bodenheim on more than one occasion as he was a frequent visitor of the Village in the mid to late 1940s and early 1950s. Else where in the same notebook is a drawing by Spencer of Joe Gould.
